Grease Crochet-A-Long: WEEK #5

Go Greased Lightning! Go Greased Lightning!

This week we pay tribute to our favorite car–Greased Lightning! (And yes, in case you didn’t know, it actually is Greased, not Grease. I somehow didn’t know that until this project!) With their slicked back hair and gyrating hips, the T-Birds sing their famous ‘Greased Lightning’ song:

Becki over at Chloe Rebecca Boutique crocheted this panel up using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Metallic Red for the background. Doesn’t it make it sparkle like the paint job on the T-Birds car?

GREASE Crochet-a-long: WEEK #4

Welcome to Rydell High!

As we all know, Zanny Zuko was looking for ways to win back Sandy, and knew he had to change. One of those changes was to go out for a sport at Rydell High. You can recall that a myriad to sports were tested and baseball was deemed a failure amongst the rest.

This week’s panel pay tribute to their alma mater, Rydell High and the letterman sweater that Danny earned by participating in cross country running. My favorite scene at the end of the movie is when ‘jock Danny’ sees the ‘new Sandy’ at the school carnival.

Grease Crochet-a-long: WEEK #3

When I think of the T-birds, I think of their jackets, the cars, and the way they combed their hair. Sometimes it was a nervous tick, sometimes it was out of embarrassment, and other times, it was a way to show masculinity. My favorite hair-slick-comb scene was after the Greased Lightnin’ song when Kenickie and Danny hug, then immediately realize that’s “not a cool guy thing to do” and start nervously combing their greased hair.

So, in tribute to these funny T-Birds moments, I give you WEEK #3: the T-birds comb. In the final layout of this graphgan, this panel is meant to be direct above or below the T-Birds panel from WEEK #2.

Grease Crochet-a-long: WEEK #2

Sometimes I get this idea in my head and I just can’t shake it. I love working up my graphs in mini corner-to-corner (mini c2c)–it’s quick, I know how it will look in my head, and I know what size the final product will be. But, I also looooove learning new stitches. Enter the block stitch. I’ve seen some super awesome graphs worked up in block stitch, like this Harry Potter graph that my girl Angie at Harper Baby Shop has been working on:

19884208_10159065188430241_4140515466278000542_n

I decided this week to try out this new-to-me stitch. Yeah…not the greatest idea trying to do this ON A BLACK PANEL. If you’re a hooker, you know that black yarn is probably not the best colored yarn to learn something new on (for you non-hookers, it’s because you can’t see your stitches very well with black yarn). So, I spent 3 days attempting and frogging over and over. Then I thought, “Hey Angela, maybe you should try out bobble stitch.” Also not a good idea to learn this other new stitch on black yarn. Repeat the attempts and frogging for another day.

So, at this point, I’d spent 4 days without ANY progress. I finally decided to give in and restart with my trust old mini c2c. But because of my wasted days, I fell behind, and this folks is what happens. I didn’t finish it in time. But, have no fear, the pattern and graphs have been updated on Ravelry. I should be done working my own panel up in just a day or two, and I will definitely be posting an update with my finished panel once I do.

This week’s panel pays tribute to our beloved T-Birds. This panel is the same size as the Pink Ladies panel. Our panel features the “T” Birds logo from their leather jackets featured in the movie. If you want to add that sheen to mimic the leather on the jacket, I suggest you use Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Metallic Black Sparkle. I went without the sparkle for this panel and just used plain old black yarn.

Having a progress photo with my bobbin set up was actually perfect timing, as I’ve been receiving a lot of questions lately about how I go about setting up my bobbins. Let me tell you the big secret–it’s a big educated guess. Yup. When I’m setting up to work on a graph, I look at the graph and do a rough count of how many bobbins of each color I think I’ll be using and start there. There’s no exact science because it depends on whether or not you want to carry your yarn at all or how many ends you are willing to weave in when you are done. My best advice is to just practice. The more graphs you work on, the easier it will become for you to pick up on the patterns you see for your bobbin needs. I hate having tons of little balls of yarn around so I make many of my bobbins as I need them, rather than making too many in the beginning.

GREASE crochet-a-long: Week #1

The time has finally come! We start our GREASE crochet-a-long (CAL) today! Every Monday a new panel will be released here on my blog. If you want to participate and have your own copy of the patterns for the panels and appliques to be released “mystery style”, you will need to head on over to my Ravelry store and purchase your own copy. Every Monday after the release on my blog, your copy of the pattern within your Ravelry library will update automatically with the new pieces for the week. Let’s get started!

Let’s get the party started with a little Pink Ladies tribute! Obviously we couldn’t have a Grease graphgan without a little Pink Ladies jacket lettering on it. The sparkle in this Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn Metallic Pinky Toes Sparkle gives it just the right sheen to mimic the shine on those iconic jackets. Now, this is one of the larger panels, so don’t be daunted by it’s size. The rest will seem like a breeze after this one!

I will be working this graphgan up using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn, my fantabulous set of custom ergonomic GREASE THEMED hooks by the ever-talented Chloe Rebecca Boutique (you can find her on IG here or her ETSY page here), and my go-to graphgan technique–mini corner to corner (mini c2c). These hooks are exclusive and limited only to those participating in the CAL with us!!! Details on how to order your own hooks are available in your pattern download.

Wonder Woman Headpiece Crochet Pattern

wonder-woman-embargo-lift-image-header-236509-1280x0

My daughter LOVES Wonder Woman. She hasn’t even seen the movie (she’s only 5) but somehow she knows that Wonder Woman can kick some booty. So last night I grabbed a hook and some yarn and started coming up with a very simple headpiece for her to wear around the house. When she woke up this morning, she was ecstatic to find a headpiece for her just like Wonder Woman’s.

IMG_5355.JPG

MATERIALS

IMG_5269-Size H (5.0mm) crochet hook (I used my custom #BossBabe ergonomic Clover crochet hook made by Chloe Rebecca Boutique, because seriously, how fitting is it to use a #BossBabe hook to make anything Wonder Woman related?)

-Yarn (I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in SUNGOLD and GRAPHITE)

-Elastic Hair Tie

-Scissors

-Yarn Needle

PATTERN

Row 1: leaving a long tail in the beginning, chain until you reach your desired length (from middle of forehead around to the back of head so that both ends of the chain just touch each other.

Row 2: SC in second chain from hook and every chain across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: SC across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4-5: Repeat row 3. Fasten off leaving a tail long for joining hair elastic.

Band detail: using GRAPHITE, join on front side of band between row 2 and 3. Surface stitch (slip stitch) the length of the band. At the end, chain 1, turn, continue slip stitching around the entire edge of band taking care to slip stitch+chain 1+slip stitch in each corner. **NOTE: Leave long SUNGOLD tails hang while doing the detail slip stitch round.** Fasten off and weave in GRAPHITE ends.

full band

Add Elastic Hair Tie: Fold over one end of band (wrong sides together) and sew the edge to the band tucking the elastic band in the fold. Secure tightly. Repeat for the opposite end of band.

Front Triangle Detail: With SUNGOLD and this pattern, make a triangle of your desired length (I made 11 rows using this pattern ). Once the desired length is achieved, chain 2 and HDC down one side, 2 HDC+chain 2+2HDC in the bottom tip of triangle, HDC up the other side of triangle. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Triangle detail

Using GRAPHITE, join at the top left corner of your upside down triangle and slip stitch along the next two sides. Fasten off and weave in ends. Using GRAPHITE, join at the top left corner of your upside down triangle between the triangle and the HDC row. Slip stitch along that line to create a second “V” detail inside the first slip stitch detail you just finished. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Attach your triangle detail centered on your band. Before weaving in end, add additional star detailing to the center of triangle.

FRIENDS CAL: The Series Finale

Just as bittersweet as the series finale during that final scene where the camera pans out and all you see is Monica’s empty apartment with 6 keys on the counter, our FRIENDS crochet-a-long (CAL) has finally come to an end. And with that, comes our final photos.

In the future, I may be posting a blog post that will include the worked up images of all of our bonus panels that I offered during our CAL (I did not share those to the public, but only to those doing the CAL). But for now, I will be concentrating my efforts on my upcoming GREASE CAL that I am running in conjunction with Becki from Chloe Rebecca Boutique.

FRIENDS CAL: Bonus Panel

What would a FRIENDS graphgan be without PIVOT! on there somewhere? This is probably my most asked about panel. EVERYONE asks me where this panel is when I share progress photos. I offered it as a bonus panel during my FRIENDS crochet-a-long (CAL) because it is a looooooong panel. Seriously, it runs the entire length of the blanket. You’ll see it in it’s entirety later on this week during a fully completed graphgan photo! :)

In case you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know where PIVOT comes from in the show FRIENDS, here’s a clip that makes it’s way onto nearly every ‘favorite FRIENDS moments’ list:

FRIENDS CAL: BONUS SQUARE #2

Even though our FRIENDS crochet-a-long is over, I still have some surprises to show you. Those who were doing our CAL with us are already aware of all the bonus appliques and bonus panels that are available to them, but the public has yet to see them!

One of the bonus squares I released during the CAL paid tribute to the gang’s trip to Las Vegas! It features the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign and a moustache applique for Ross’ Sharpie moustache artwork on Rachel’s face:

FRIENDS CAL WEEK #13: The One at Central Perk

While this week is the end of our regularly scheduled FRIENDS crochet-a-long panels, I have a few more surprises up my sleeve :) Next week we will be working on joining all the panels together along with the border that I have come up with for the whole blanket.

This week’s panel is by far, my favorite panel. This panel is not for the faint-at-heart (aka don’t do this panel first if you’re just starting because it IS the HARDEST one to work up…trust me), but, it’s my favorite. We very well cannot have a proper FRIENDS graphgan without a panel dedicated to Central Perk Cafe, now can we?

Just like Monica’s apartment was a key player in location, so was Central Perk. I mean, seriously, they were there all the time. Here’s a funny article listing a few iconic Central Perk moments.

I present you with WEEK #13: The One at Central Perk…
