Gilmore Girls CAL-Border

I was reminded yesterday that I still hadn’t written anything up on the border I decided to use for my Gilmore Girls graphgan. I had a hard deciding what colors I was going to use (I used so many different colors in this blanket, that I had many to choose from) for the border, but finally decided on going with a Chilton plaid color scheme since I never got around to finishing that Chilton plaid mini-banner I wanted to do.

completed-gg-blanket

Here are the colors I used (and the order from top to bottom) in which I used them:

Border colors.jpg

Once my blanket was complete, I used white to do a round of HDC all the way around. Then from there, I just did a simple Moss stitch round in each of the 3 remaining colors. Moss stitch is SC + chain 1, skip the next stitch below and SC + chain 1 in the next stitch. Once you’ve finished your first row of SC + chain 1, you will then SC in the chain 1 space for the rows after that. It’s a clean, simple, quick border that doesn’t add a lot of bulk to your blanket.

border-edge-1

For the corners, I did an SC + chain 2 + SC combo in each corner. The 2 SCs in that combo are always done in the chain 2 space created in the previous row. Be sure not to pull your yarn really tight when working on this border or you will end up with a scrunched up border (ripples). If you are a tight crocheter, you may want to even consider going up a hook size for the border.

Gilmore Girls CAL-Complete

It is done. Our Gilmore Girls crochet-a-long (CAL) has come to an end. I’ve loved seeing all your finished photos and can’t wait for more to come in. I finally got mine all put together and put a border on it in Chilton colors. I had planned on adding a small Chilton plaid banner along the bottom, but I had to do without because of time constraints. It is still available as a graph that you can download here.

completed-gg-blanketcompleted-gg-blanket-selfie-logo

Even without the Chilton banner, I love my finished product. It came out larger than I thought it would end up. As you can see here, it almost completely covers my entire Queen sized bed. I have a few more appliques that I made but haven’t yet attached. I’m still deciding whether or not I want to add Petal the Pig and some more yellow daisies. I’ll snuggle up with the blanket while I ponder their placement.

Gilmore Girls CAL – Bonus Appliques

I could never fit all that I want to include on my Gilmore Girls graphgan without it fitting a California King sized bed. I want my blanket to be a large throw size for curling up with on the couch. Because of that, tough decisions were made and some squares had to be cut. Meaning, I didn’t make all the squares that I released (20 small squares + Luke’s + banners), but stuck to the original layout–Luke’s center square + 12 smaller squares surrounding + the Gilmore Girls banner (+ the Chilton mini-banner along the bottom that I’m currently working on).

The solution to my dilemma? Appliques. I love making appliques. They can be simple or complex and quite easy to attach to almost anything. Here are the appliques I decided on:

gilmore-girls-cal-appliques

SNOWFLAKES

I wanted snowflakes because of my Lorelai’s obsession with snow. From snow being magical to having an uncanny ability to smell snow before it comes (without snow being in the forecast), snow always has a big part in the winter episodes. And because no snowflakes are the same, I had to include several different kinds. Here all the snowflakes I used on my blanket (I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in #10 White for all my snowflakes and kinda just winged it with the hook sizes):

snowflake-appliques

Snowflake #1: Flower Girl Cottage

Snowflake #2: Attic24

Snowflake #3: The Hobbee Hive

APPLE

I needed to include an apple to symbolize Rory’s revelation at the very end of the revival, and what better way to do this than to include an apple? You may have noticed that during Week #7, I released an apple square to symbolize the same exact thing, but like I mentioned earlier, I had to make cuts and the apple square didn’t make it because I could easily make a little applique. The designer even has a video for this if you need it (it’s linked on her website I posted below).

DAISIES

Who can forget the episode where Max Medina proposes (a second time) to Lorelai by sending 1,000 yellow daisies to her at the Independence Inn? Of all her suitors, I liked Max the best. So, using my trusty I Love This Yarn #330 Yellow and #356 Sungold for the centers, I made a trio of yellow daisies to scatter around the blanket as a tribute this:

yellow-daisies-appliques

Yellow Daisies: Repeat Crafter Me

RORY’S FIRST CAR (DEAN)

I opted to skip the original Rory’s First Car (Dean) square with the same inspiration so I could make Sookie’s square. But, I wanted to put that car on my blanket somewhere because it’s a big part of Rory and Dean’s (first car, first “I love you”), and Rory and Jess’ relationship (when Jess crashes the car with Rory in it). So, I set out to find an applique that looked like her car. And I found one. I followed the directions except I used I Love This Yarn (WW) in Medium Blue and Black, and a 4.5mm hook. I also used hdc for the wheels rather than the dc in the pattern.

Rory’s First Car: Mammy Made

PETAL THE PIG (KIRK)

I skipped Petal the Pig’s square as well. I loved that little pig in the revival and I love Kirk’s character in the series, so I knew I had to include them in the blanket as well. I made my own pig pattern up:

petal-the-pig-applique

Here’s what I used:

Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Rosy Cheeks (#101), Pink (#100), Black (#30)

8mm safety eyes (I buy mine from 6060 on Etsy)

Clover 4.5mm hook

**NOTE** Chain 2 at the beginning of rounds are NOT counted as a dc.

BODY, TAIL, & LEGS:

Round 1: With Pink, make a Magic Ring. Chain 2 and make 10 dc in Magic Ring. Sl st first dc at the beginning of the round. Pull Magic Ring tight. [10 dc]

Round 2: Chain 2. 2 dc in same stitch as chain 2. 2 dc in every stitch around. Sl st to first dc of the round. [20 dc]

Round 3: Chain 2. 1 dc in same stitch as chain 2. 2 dc in next stitch. *1 dc in next stitch. 2 dc in next stitch.* Repeat from *to* all the way around. Sl st to first dc of the round. [30 dc]

Round 4: TAIL Chain 15. Sl st in second chain from hook, and every chain. Sl st to body in same dc as the base of the chain. [15 sl st]

Round 5: LEGS (This is a continuation of round 4, but will be making the legs for the pig). Sl st 5 times. *Chain 6. dc in 4th chain from your hook. dc in next 2 chains. Skip 1 dc on body.* Sl st in next 7 dc. Repeat from *to* to make front leg. Sl st in next dc, and every dc around to tail. Sl st and fasten off, leaving a long tail to attach applique to blanket.

 HEAD:

Round 1: With Pink, make a Magic Ring. Chain 2 and make 10 dc in Magic Ring. Sl st first dc at the beginning of the round. Pull Magic Ring tight. [10 dc]

Round 2: Chain 2. 2 dc in same stitch as chain 2. 2 dc in every stitch around. Sl st to first dc of the round. Fasten off leaving a long tail to attach applique to blanket. [20 dc]

EARS:

With Rosy Cheeks, attach to any dc with a Sl st.*Chain 5. sc in 3rd chain from your hook. hdc in next 2 chains. Skip 1 dc on head. Sl st in next dc.*

Fold top of head down towards you. Sl st in the 3rd loop behind the next 3 dc (not the back loop, but the 3rd loop below that back look so it’s hidden from the front of head). Chain 1, Sl st in next dc. Repeat *to* to make second ear. Fasten off. Weave in tails.

NOSE:

With Rosy Cheeks, make a Magic Ring. Chain 2 and make 10 hdc in Magic Ring. Sl st first hdc at the beginning of the round. Pull Magic Ring tight. Fasten off. Sew to HEAD so bottom edges are touching. You may choose to add black nostrils with pieces of black scrap yarn.[10 hdc]

EYES:

Attach 8mm safety eyes to HEAD above nose.

**NOTE** It’s okay if your applique curls. It will lay flat once you attach it to your blanket.

DIAMOND RING

I needed to do something for Luke and Lorelai’s wedding in the revival because IT FINALLY HAPPENED, but didn’t want to go with the stereotypical wedding rings or wedding bells on a square because I felt like the squares were all a little more in depth than stereotypical stuff. I searched and searched for a crocheted wedding ring applique, and found nothing. So, I made my own:

wedding-ring-applique

Here’s what I used:

Red Heart’s Fashion Crochet Thread in Silver (leftover from another project)

Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in #10 White

Clover 4.5mm hook

RING:

I tripled my thin shiny silver thread using Briana K’s awesome video on making a triple thick strand using just one skein. Seriously. Good stuff to know.

Using the triple thick thread, I made about 30 chains and joined together with a slip stitch to make a circle about 3′ across.

Chain 1. sc into the circle (not into the chains) all the way around your circle. Every once in a while I stopped to push my all my stitches together so it was a nice solid ring of sc’s. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc.

*Chain 6. In the second chain from your hook, Sl st. sc in next chain, hdc in next chain, dc in next chain, tr in last chain. Skip 2 sc (depending on your tension, you may have to adjust how many sc to skip–skip as many as you need to equal the height of your tr. In my case, my tr is the same height as the width of 2 sc), Sl st in the 3rd sc.* Repeat *to* 2 more times. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching your applique! You will have a total of 3 “spikes” to anchor your diamond to the ring.

DIAMOND:

**NOTE** Chain 2 at the beginning of the row is considered 1 dc.

Here’s a great video in case you don’t know how to use FPdc and BPdc to create the ribbing on the diamond:

Row 1: Using white yarn and same hook, chain 11. dc in the fourth chain from your hook. dc in every chain. [9 dc]

Row 2: (WS) Chain 3, turn. dc in first dc. dc in next 6 stitches. 2 dc in turning chain. [11 dc]

Row 3: (RS) Chain 3, turn. dc in first dc. FPdc in next stitch. dc in next 5 stitches. FPdc in next stitch. dc in next stitch. 2 dc in turning chain. [11 dc+2 FPdc]

Row 4: (WS) Chain 3, turn. dc in first dc. dc in next 2 stitches. BPdc around FPdc from previous row. dc in next 5 stitches. BPdc around FPdc from previous row. dc in next 2 stitches. 2 dc in turning chain. [13 dc+2 BPdc]

Row 5: (RS) Chain 3, turn. dc in second stitch (no increase this row!!!). dc in next 2 stitches. FPdc around BPdc from previous row. dc in next 5 stitches. FPdc around BPdc from previous row. dc in next 3 stitches. dc in turning chain. [13 dc+2 BPdc]

Row 6: (WS) Chain 1, turn. Sl st in every stitch. [15 Sl st]

Row 7: (RS) Chain 1. Working into the back loop from ROW 5 (not the slip stitch row), sc2tog over first 2 stitches, hdc in next stitch, dc in next 3 stitches, tr in next 3 stitches, dc in next 3 stitches, hdc in next stitch, sc2tog over last 2 stitches.

Final round: Chain 1, turn piece so it is sideways and sc around the entire piece. Sl st to first sc and fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew applique to blanket.

PAW PRINT

In an effort to pay tribute to the Gilmore females’ dog–Paul Anka, named after the singer Paul Anka, I added a paw print applique to my blanket. The idea came from someone in our CAL Facebook group, and I loved it, so I went with it.

paul-anka-paw-print

Here’s what I used:

3.75mm Clover crochet hook

Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Toasted Almond (#150) & Brown (#160)

This video is for making the background of the pawprint is below.

The tutorial for the pads on the paw print are located here: Mary J Handmade

LAYOUT

Here is my current layout before the squares are all sewn together and before all the appliques are attached. It probably won’t change since I have them all stacked in the right order for me to attach them all together. The only thing missing is the Chilton Plaid Mini-Banner I just released yesterday–I still have to finish making that one.

Gilmore Girls CAL – Bonus Banner

So, I didn’t plan on making any additional squares or banners, and yet, here I am posting a third banner. I really didn’t plan this one. I was playing around with the layout on my own blanket while trying to figure out which additional squares I wanted to make and realized I didn’t want to make an additional row of squares, but I did want to add the Chilton plaid on my blanket somehow. This is how the Chilton Banner was born:

chilton-banner-100x17-logo

Let’s call it a mini-banner since it’s not the same height as all the rest of the squares, coming in at 100×17 pixels. It will fit the original width of the blanket with the layout that is outlined in my FAQs document.

I have this graph available in several formats–PDF and png. Due to the length of the graph, I have broken them up into 2 separate sheets so you can easily see the graph. All you do is put them side-by-side and work both pages together (don’t make each page separately). Below you will find the links for them via Google Drive documents.

Gilmore Girls CAL – Week #8

This is it! We’ve made it to the final week of this Gilmore Girls Crochet-a-long (CAL)! That means it’s BANNER WEEK! I am not releasing any bonus square this week, but later on this week, I will be posting a few crochet appliques you may want to take advantage of and add them to your blanket (I secretly love appliques).

I designed two different options–one banner is a nod towards the original series run and the other banner is a tribute to the revival. I made the banner inspired by the original series run:

fall-banner-fullfall-banner-close-up

The banner is supposed to resemble the opening credits and song where the Gilmore girls title is on the screen with colorful fall leaves behind it:

The revival inspired banner has the same classic Gilmore girls title, but the background is that vibrant turquoise that you see in the revival posters:

revival-poster-collage

Now, I designed this CAL around Luke’s sign, with 12 smaller square surrounding it, topped off with a banner (for more information about the layout, see the FAQs document I have available for this CAL). If you’ve been following along, you’ll notice that I have released a TON of extra squares. Those squares are meant to be used as alternatives or to make your blanket bigger–whatever you choose. *IF* you are planning on changing the layout of the blanket and will be adding additional columns of squares, please be aware that the banner is 31 pixels tall. This means that any of the squares I have designed will not be tall enough to stand next to the banner. Take a look:

banner-height

BUT, there’s a super easy fix–just add 6 rows to any of my smaller squares are you’re fine (ideally, 3 on the top and 3 on the bottom of the square to keep the image centered). Now, that’s ROWS, not COLUMNS (FYI, rows go horizontal)!

Gilmore Girls CAL – Week #7 Bonus Squares

This week marks the end of our bonus squares. With all memorable characters and events in Gilmore Girls, I could go on and on and on creating additional squares, but I won’t. I do have to end this crochet-a-long (CAL) eventually. Next week is our last week–banner week, plus a few small appliques I will be adding to my own graphgan.

I had just one bonus square planned for this week, but the members over in our Facebook group convinced me to add a few more. So, here are the 3 final bonus squares for this CAL.

I just knew I had to include a snowflake square because of the girls’ fondness for the first snow of the year. I’m from Hawaii so I understand the magic of snow from a non-snow-country perspective. I’ve never had to deal with snow in any other capacity other than on vacation (living in the Southeast of the United States, I still have this view of snow).

i-smell-snow-25x25-logo

And what would the Gilmore Girls be without Paris Geller? She’s my favorite non-Gilmore character. She knows what she wants and makes no excuses for getting it. She’s hella smart, driven, fierce, and strong. And in true GG fashion, she has witty banter and hilarious scenes full of funny lines.

I raked my brain throughout the entire CAL trying to think of something that would represent Paris, but all the attributes I love about her are not physical and not really represented by any symbol. So, I went to my Facebook group and asked them for ideas. The best (and most popular) idea was Chilton plaid. Chilton is where we are introduced to Paris and where Rory and Paris become lifelong friends. So, I give you, Chilton Plaid:

chilton-plaid-25x25-logo

Last but not least, I picked my favorite town tradition and turned it into a square. My favorite town tradition takes place during Season 2, Episode 13 “A Tisket, A Tasket.” It’s the Annual Stars Hollow Picnic Basket Auction, aptly named ‘Stars Hollow Bid-on-a-basket Fundraiser.’ I don’t know why I love this little tradition, but what could be a better way to raise funds for a good cause than to dine over food and good conversation? Sure, it could end badly, but with the charm of Stars Hollow, what could go wrong? (ahem…Dean…Jess…Rory…)

Here is a mock-up of Rory’s basket meant for Dean for the auction:

Gilmore Girls CAL – Week #7

***WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM “GILMORE GIRLS: A YEAR IN THE LIFE!!***

I finally got the chance to sit down and watch the revival, and let me tell you, I’ve got lots to talk about (not necessarily here, but let’s just say that I’ve got questions for Mrs. Sherman Palladino). BTW, if you somehow missed the big SPOLIER ALERT at the very top of this page, here’s my final warning, if you haven’t seen the revival yet and have somehow escaped all the spoilers on the internet, turn back now my friend, ’cause the squares for this week come from the revival.

Those final 4 words. Now, I’m going to get into a huge discussion about it here, but they are what they are and one of our squares this week is a tribute to those final 4 words. In case you didn’t know, here is the script from the final 4 words that Amy Sherman Palladino says she always envisioned ending the series with:

Rory: “Mom?”

Lorelai: “Yeah?”

Rory: “I’m pregnant.”

gilmoregirls_final4words

I mean, seriously?!? I get the whole artistic ‘full circle’ crap with the vision behind it, but as a fan, I think it’s a load of crap. It’s not that I didn’t like it or agree with how things ended, but after all that build up, THAT’S HOW THE SERIES IS GOING TO END?! WITH THE BIGGEST CLIFFHANGER EVER?!?! I think we argue all day long about how the Rory in the revival was highly unlike the Rory from the original run, but then again, no one can be perfect for forever. She seemed to represent a generation where a wanderlust and un-rooted existence seems to be more of the norm than a textbook college/job-settle down-marry and have kids that we millenials seem to attribute to previous generations.

Anyway, I used an apple to represent Rory’s pregnancy because we all remember the scene from Season 5, Episode 21 “Blame Booze and Melville,” where Sookie is in labor and Lorelai is freaking out thinking she’s pregnant because she was craving an apple. She tracks down a doctor to tell her the story of how when she was pregnant with Rory, she kept craving apples, which is not the norm for her, and she thought she might be pregnant again. Long story short, Lorelai wasn’t pregant that time. I figured with a palatte that only that mother and daughter duo share, Rory would also crave apples when she was pregnant.

rorys-pregnant-25x25-closeuprorys-pregnant-25x25-full

One of my favorite characters on the show is Kirk. He plays everything from a DSL installer to the guy that runs the Black, White, and Read theater part of the bookshop to an Ooooober driver. No matter what Kirk is doing, he always brings a smile to my face (or a cringe if he’s doing his interpretation of his own birth). I thought it only fitting that Kirk had a square on our blanket, so I give you Petal the pig.

Gilmore Girls CAL Bonus Square #5

I couldn’t have an Emily Gilmore square without a square for Richard Gilmore on this blanket now, could I? Richard was often quiet, but when he spoke, it was of importance. He was strong with his words and convictions, but always had a heart of gold especially for the ladies in his life.

With his Yale colored bowtie and a stack of beloved books, I hope this square pays tribute to Richard Gilmore:

Gilmore Girls CAL – Week #6

Moving on from our first installment (Dean and the car he built for Rory) into the leading males in Rory’s life, we come to Jess and Logan. Now, I’m not going to be getting into the whole #teamDean #teamJess #teamLogan thing here, I’m just paying tribute to all 3 of the males that played a part in Rory’s story at all the right times.

So Dean was Rory’s first love. That was interrupted by the resident ‘bad boy’ in Stars Hollow–Jess Mariano. I understand the bad boy appeal after the do-gooder Dean, but I had a hard time trying to figure out how best to represent Jess. His love of books for sure, but I’m saving books for later. I always think of the episode ‘A-Tisket, A-Tasket’ where Jess bids on Rory’s picnic basket at a town function and outbids her current beau, Dean. This seemed to be the very beginning of their romance, even though she was already with someone.

And then I realized that the best representation of Jess and Rory’s relationship was a swan. At one point during their relationship, Jess shows up in Hartford for dinner at the Gilmore’s house very late, with a big black eye. Rory is convinced that he’s late with a black eye because Jess got into a fight with Dean, when in all actuality, he was attacked by a swan (he doesn’t tell her that). This trust issue seems to the brunt of all their troubles, and it is well represented by that swan and the black eye.

Next up in Rory’s line of suitors is Logan Huntzberger. Logan was Rory’s college love. It is with Logan and the Life & Death Brigade that Rory comes out of her shell and steps away from her comfort zone. He helped Rory open herself up to adventure at right time. Their witty banter and deep thoughts are represented by the love rocket Logan gave Rory when he went to London. The depth of thought that went into the gift and Rory’s research and revelation into what it meant for their relationship at the time, is pretty symbolic of the relationship those two had.

I made the graph without the black background because it’s just easier to see the graph if half the squares are NOT blacked out. But anyway, here’s how it generally looks without the black background:

While my Gilmore Girls CAL posts will stay up and remain free, for convenience, I have also combined all of these graphs into one giant PDF file for those that would like to purchase a copy of it condensed, rather than having to hunt thru my posts. You can purchase this pattern for a small fee here on Ravelry.

Feel free to make and sell products using this, but because I put a lot of time and love into this big CAL project, I ask that you give me credit or if it’s online somewhere, you link back to me. If you’re not a part of our CAL FB group, come and join us here.

I can’t wait to see what you do with this! The official hastag for this CAL is:

Gilmore Girls CAL Bonus Square #4

What’s a mother-daughter relationship show without…the grandmother? One of my favorite characters in Gilmore Girls is the grandmother, Emily Gilmore. I wasn’t always a fan of her’s, but eventually her witty comebacks and sophisticated sass won me over.

I wanted something that reminded me of Emily’s sass and spunk, but had a touch of elegance. I went with a background similar to the color of a box from Tiffany’s for class, and a tube of Vicious Trollop lipstick with some red wine. I was sooo excited to be able to add some Vicious Trollop to the graphgan.

I give you Emily’s square:
