MARY POPPINS MYSTERY CAL : WEEK #8

This week is our last week of panels!! We’ve done a lot in just 8 weeks! Our tribute for our final panel is actually so supercalifragilisticexpialidocious-ly big that it took TWO panels to fit it all in! You guessed it–this week we’re SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!

This week has two panels–two banners that run the length of the blanket on both sides:

ChaosAndChopSuey MPCAL - Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious PART 1ChaosAndChopSuey MPCAL - Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious PART 2

You also have the opportunity this week to pick your own colors! Pick two (or more) colors that you used in this CAL that stand out to you, and have a go at it! We have another planned applique coming this week just in time for next week when we join all these panels together and create a border!

MARY POPPINS MYSTERY CAL : WEEK #7

No Mary Poppins graphgan would be complete without a tape measure! This week, is our banner week and instead of using the film’s title as the banner, I went a different way–the tape measure.

Here’s a close-up of that shot…

My version…

ChaosAndChopSuey MPCAL - Practically Perfect overall

You may notice that this week, an image of the graph is being shown. That’s because with the holiday week last week, we traveled and I didn’t have any crochet time! I’m working on it and will get you a finished photo as soon as that happens. Rather than finishing the entire graphgan beforehand, I work just a week ahead of everyone because I love the CAL community and crocheting together.

MARY POPPINS MYSTERY CAL : WEEK #6

As we head into WEEK #6 of the Chaos And Chop Suey Mary Poppins Mystery Crochet-a-long, we have some catching up to do! During WEEK #4, we actually had TWO panels that were released, but I only made one of them public. The second panel for WEEK #4 was a short, but wide panel where there were two options: 17 Cherry Tree Lane or a nod towards the song Chim Chim Cheree.

This week, WEEK #6, has several options as well…3 to be exact! You can choose from either a panel inspired by the song ‘Step in Time,’ Mary Poppins’ rum punch medicine and medicine bottle that magically changes flavors, or a panel with Mary Poppins’ carpet bag.

I chose to make the carpet bag inspired panel. This panel includes a few of the things she pulled out from her magic carpet bag–a mirror, a plant, and a floor lamp:

MARY POPPINS MYSTERY CAL : WEEK #5

Making our way back to the sidewalk chalk drawing, we visit the scene where Mary Poppins, Bert, and the children take a ride on a merry-go-round where the horses magically jump off the merry-go-round and the group finds themselves riding thru the countryside on merry-go-round horses. But that countryside ride is not without the excitement of riding thru a fox hunt, ending up on a race course, riding in a race, which Mary Poppins wins atop her purple and lavender carousel horse named “Jingles.” This of course leads up to arguably the most recognizable song in the movie, “Mary Poppins”–Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

This week I give you, “Jingles,” Mary Poppins’ purple and lavender carousel horse…

Mary Poppins Mystery CAL : WEEK #4

This week we move onto another favorite song, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.” Mary Poppins looks on as the Banks family gather in song and leave their home to fly their kite that Mr. Banks has repaired. That repair job on the kite is symbolic of the relationship between father and children that Mary Poppins has helped to repair in her time as their nanny.

“Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let’s go fly a kite!”

MARY POPPINS MYSTERY CAL: WEEK #3

This week we share our love for Bert. A man of many coats, I chose to focus on his chalk drawing self with his striped jacket, blue bow tie, and straw hat. As a kid, one of my favorite parts of the movie was when everyone jumps into Bert’s sidewalk chalk drawing.

MARY POPPINS MYSTERY CAL: WEEK #1

The day is finally here! That is, the first day of our Mary Poppins mystery graphgan crochet-a-long! I have planning the panels for this crochet-a-long (CAL) for about a year, so I’m super excited to see this CAL kick-off. Every Monday between now and December 3, 2018, a new panel will be released. You will see it here on this blog, but the patterns will be automatically updated in your Ravelry library once you have purchased your copy of the pattern.

Mary Poppins is my favorite Disney movie, and I’ve passed that love along to my children. We have fun watching the movie and singing the songs. I am getting my kids a set of the first few Mary Poppins books by P. L. Travers for Christmas this year, and I hope they’ll love them as much as they enjoy the movie.

We kick off our Mary Poppins CAL with the one and only….Mary Poppins herself! Flowers and a bow applique complete her look.

Stars, Stripes, and Rings

Figure skating is my first love. It’s the thing I first remember falling in love with. I started figure skating when I was 6 years old. I skated all the way thru college (and beyond), and started coaching as a college student. In fact, I coached on my skates while pregnant with my twins up until the point where I could no longer bend over enough to tie my own skates (at about 7 months).

skates

In case you didn’t know, the 2018 Winter Olympics are about to start (opening ceremonies air February 9 on NBC here in the United States), and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m one of those Winter Olympics fans that annoy the non-Winter Olympics fans in my house. When you grew up figure skating, the way you watch the figure skating events is like none-other. For some reason, figure skaters clench and feel the moves happening on the ice. Even if we could never pull those moves off. I want to say it’s muscle memory since that’s what was ingrained in my head during every practice. Perhaps it’s the excitement of the event. Or a combination. Whatever it is, it happens. And I’m looking forward to going thru this again starting next week :)

You can find all the information on when each event is happening here on this awesome schedule: Time’s Winter Olympic Schedule PyeongChang2018

Or on the official PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics website.

It’s been cold here lately and I’ve been cuddling up in my house with scarves and sweaters and blankets galore. I knew I’d want to watch the Pyeongchang Olympics with something…festive. So, I whipped up a little something to wear–a Team USA scarf. Now I’m ready to cheer on all of the amazing athletes as they represent their own countries (of course I’ll cheer a little louder for our own athletes).

down the ice1

I worked up this super scarf using a size H (5.0mm) hook, worsted weight (on the lighter side) yarn from Hobby Lobby’s line I Love This Yarn, and a traditional corner-to-corner (c2c) stitch. The entire scarf is worked up in one piece, with the stars added on afterwards as appliques. I finished the piece off with a simple single crochet border around the edge, taking care to do sc+chain 2+sc in each corner.

Here are the colors that I used for this scarf:

And those awesome star appliques? Well, I found them in two different places. The large stars are from One Dog Woof. I followed her directions as written for my 3 largest stars, making the stars one layer thick, then attaching them to my scarf with a needle and the long remaining tail from each star. And the 2 smallest stars are from Repeat Crafter Me, again, as written.
